Looking back over the years I have fond memories about many of my dressing up escapades. I remember very vividly dressing up as a barbie in a skin tight full body suit and ratted my hair up just like a barbie and the rockers, one year I dressed as a shower complete with balloon bubbles, a "cereal" killer and a very cute care bear.
I remember hosting my very first Halloween party. I worked so hard to make everything perfect. I went so far as to carve a pumpkin then fill it with dry ice a little water for a center piece. We watched scary movies and played silly games. It was great.
Another memory of dressing up that I have didn't happen on Halloween. Kerstina, Amie, Shaniel and I dressed up as old men and old ladies (clothes courtesy of G-ma and G-pa Bates). Then Grandma talked us into going down to main street. Grandma found Mekette and her friends and turned us loose to humiliate her. I'm sure it worked, and I hope one day Mekette will find it in her to forgive us, but we sure had fun!!!!! Thanks Grandma!

My "awesomest" Halloween costume what probably the White Lady! I looked so cool. I have tons of great ones as well: 50's girl, Barbie (I was pink, Heidi was black)and the carebears were awesome too. Weren't we the little Care Bear animals, you know the hippo, lion, penguin, and stuff. Who was the penguin??? I think I was the elephant. I can't remember exactly
My mom is an excellent seamstress and she has made some amazing costumes over the years. Recently she has made some for my kids, mostly Tiger. One year for Christmas, she made him everyone of the Power Ranger costumes. That got a little embarassing at the grocery store. He aslo had Spiderman, Batman, and Superman. When he was two or three, he was a dinosaur.
I think this year, I may ask her to figure out Thomas the Tank Engine for Derek. (Mom, when you read this, start imagining the possibilities!!!) Tiger is going to be Indiana Jones--which mom made him for his birthday.
My mom is the greatest isn't she. Love ya mommy!
Heidi,
That is so funny! I love Halloween too. What I would give to have seen Makette's face when she was with her friends!;)
I remember dressing up as a ballerina dancer one year. I thought I was so cool, because I was JUST KIDDING! I was only like 5.
A favorite memory for me was the yearly Halloween celebration at Mona Elementary School. My favorite thing was the cake walk. I won every year!
Thanks for this post. It was fun to read. I hope you are doing well.

Halloween...Oh Halloween! They all kind of blur together so I can't say I really have a favorite. But I can make a list of the things I love about Halloween. I love Halloween songs and stories, I love growing pumpkins, especially the giant ones. I love watching the kids pick out their pumpkin and watching it grow. I do like carving pumpkins, (the kids were so creative) but I hate that the kids would get tired and I'd end up finishing 6 pumpkins every year (1 was mine). I love sitting outside in the dark, cuddled in a warm coat, watching the firelight dance through a Jack-o-lanterns features. I love sewing costumes. I love trick-or-treating and watching kids run from house to house. Kids are just dang fun! I love having soup and bread before we leave the house and ending the night by visiting grandma's houses--I love pomegranents (sp). My least favorite thing about Halloween are the pumpkin smashers. We always try to get home before they get ours. I love the smell of chocolate as the kids dump out their haul, sort and count it! Wow, what a treasure! (I'd make mental notes and eat some of it why they were at school.) Carmel apples are my favorite Halloween treat. My favorite Halloween when I was a girl was when my brother Bill and some cousins made the scariest spook alley ever in our basement. My favorite halloween party with the kids was out to Carol's house before they moved to Colorado. My least favorite Halloween was the one we spent in the burn center with RaeLynn. Kevin hated that Halloween too, his candy got stolen!
P.S. I just had a chuckle as I remembered the Halloween when we took the kids to the 49th street galleria spook alley--RaeLynn was so scared, she cried.
I remember the Halloween party at our house before we moved to Colorado too. I don't remember what I was, but it was sure fun. Heidi, I remember you 4 dressing up. I laugh every time I see the picture of 2 old men and 2 old ladies jumping on the tramp! My favorite Halloween has to be the last 2 years. My Mom has started an annual Harvest Fest at her barn. We all get together and celebrate the harvest, have a dinner, last year we had an awesome carnival for the kids. The best part is the walk through the haunted orchard and the ride on the hay wagon. I also love Halloween in our little town. A couple down the street has a haunted house in their home for free (very brave!). It is an excellent haunted house. And there is this corn mazze up the road, people chase you with chanesaws and there are all sorts of scary people in the maze. At the entrance you can sit around the fire and watch a scary movie, get hotchocolate and popcorn. I love it soo fun! 2 years ago my sisters our husbands and I went to a corn maze in Logan that was a blast! We charged through the corn laughing like we were drunk and jumping out of the corn trying to scare people. Then afterwards we joined a college dance around the bonfire. We all were acting like a bunch of kids, mind you I was 30. It was so much fun. My brave Mother watched 6 grandkids while we went and had fun. I love sewing Halloween costumes too. I have made my kids one every year of their lives (except last year. I was sewing their quilts for Christams) I could go on and on, I love Halloween too.
hmmm...my most memorable (probably not my favorite) Halloween has to be the one where we all went and picked Heidi and Kerstina up from their drinking party. I'm sure they can give you all the exciting details of the actual party, but let me tell you the evening from my point of view. I had just finished reaping a few of the benefits from a pillowcase 1/4 of the way full from trick-or-treating when we got a call out at Grandma Bates' house telling us that someone had just seen Heidi and Kerstina go to a party. My mom was so mad! She hauled Rae and I over to where the party was being held (I put my seat belt on...the driving was a little scary). She instructed us to stay in the vehicle while she went in and got them. I kept watching for her to come out of the house and when I did see her again she was bringing Heidi out in a headlock with Kerstina a couple of feet behind her. When they got back in the car my mom was swearing at Heidi and I was a terrified little 11-year-old. That was when I decided that I was never going to drink alcohol. Thanks Heidi :)
In my defense, I wasn't drinking. Really, for once I was innocent! I remember on the way home from that horribly socoial life altering experience, my dad screaming threats to breathalizer test, and since I was sober I rose to the argument. We screamed a lot but I didn't end up at the police station. There is a lot more to this story, I have it written in my journal I'll have to copy it and post it for the amusment of all.
I am posting this on your blog too, just incase you don't make it back to mine! Heidi, I will be glad to help you make a cute header! I asked Mallory how she always gets such cute headers, and she told me about this awesome website. its www.picnic.com You go there and edit your pictures. You can make a collage like I did, and add different things to it. After you are done editing then you save the picture to your computer and then upload it to blogger. It's a free website, but you can also upgrade to there premium. It probably offers more things you can do. I have been thinking about upgrading and using it. But I have to thank Mallory for the insight on the picnic website. Its so fun and addicting. So good luck and let me know if you need some help.
So, halloween has actually not been my favorite holiday. I actually hate spooky things (I am a baby and get scared really easily!) But my favorite season is fall. I don't really even remember what I have dressed up as... I know one year I was a sunburnt barbie!
Your cakes are amazing! I don't get how some of those are even possible! Good job.
I remember when you guys dressed up like this! You looked great!
Jenny
Is that the halloween we were at the white house??? Neither one of us were drinking. We had just been hanging out there with a few friends (seriously, only like ten) when all of these people just started showing up. Dallas Howa was freaking out because his parents were going to be home soon to find the giant party he wasn't supposed to be having.
To this day, he thanks me every once in a while for saving his butt that night. I got off the hook because I had to take my own car home. We really weren't in that much trouble. Well I wasn't anyway. I believe I was already graduated from high school when that happened.
Annie, you were so dramatic when you were little. You always make our teenage years sound so much worse than they really were.
I like your costumes...oh the good old days.
Ohhh, you have a PICTURE!! How fun, I need a copy. I will always remember that day, good old days...
We had a hoot dressing up as old men and old ladies. Can you remember that Kerstina and I dressed up as old men and went to my house and scared you and Shaniel when we walked in the back door? Grandma took us around town in the red car with our feet hanging out the back, dragging the ground. Grandma was the coolest grandma! That was alot of fun! I always had lots of fun with your family. Amie
LOL! I will never forget! You four were so funny!! P.S. I forgive you...
